Description of a Flinders Cardiologist Registrar
Working as part of a multidisciplinary academic and clinical team, you will provide clinical services of the highest possible standard to patients of Flinders Medical Centre. This will be achieved both in terms of individual performance and by contributing to a multidisciplinary approach to the delivery of patient care. Under the direction of the Head of Training, Department of Cardiology, you will provide appropriate clinical care to patients and assist with coordinating follow-up care. You will maintain comprehensive clinical records which document significant patient management decisions, and ensure effective communication with other care providers to promote continuity of patient care. As part of your role, you will have an active involvement in teaching medical students and junior medical staff as well as contributing to the conduct of research and audit within the Department of Cardiology.

Cardiologist Training Positions - Cardiologist Registrars and Cardiologist Advanced Trainee
This training position will encompass rotation throughout the Flinders Medical Centre and the Royal Darwin Hospital. The Flinders Medical Centre has earned an international reputation as one of Australia’s finest public teaching hospitals and as a centre for research excellence. The hospital is co-located with the Flinders University School of Medicine and the Flinders Private Hospital.

Consultant-led cardiology registrar teaching and research opportunities at Flinders Cardiology Training
In addition to the teaching previously mentioned, we have a busy academic schedule encompassing journal club, weekly echo round, weekly departmental and hospital-wide Grand Rounds, and Consultant-led junior medical doctor teaching.

Trainees are strongly encouraged to get involved in our active research and international clinical trials program. The Department has large databases to support a wide variety of research interests. Each subspecialty stream, led by Professor Joseph Selvanayagam (CMR), Associate Professor Anand Ganesan (EP), Associate Profesor Carmine DePasquale (HFS), Professor Derek Chew (ACS and outcomes) and Professor Phil Aylward (Clinical Trialist), has an excellent track record in producing world-class research and attracting competitive grant funding.

We strive to produce well-rounded Cardiologists. Trainees are encouraged to identify Consultant mentors in their first year, who are expected to support them throughout their training and beyond.

Post-training opportunities - Cardiologist Trainees and Cardiology Fellowships

The Cardiology Department offers several higher research degrees and clinical sub-speciality training programs following completion of core training. Furthermore, we have strong collaborative links with leading international institutions for post-fellowship opportunities. Recent Trainees and Fellows have gone on to undertake fellowship training at The Alfred Hospital Advanced Heart Failure/ Transplant Unit, St Vincent’s Hospital Heart Failure Unit, St Paul’s Hospital (Vancouver, Canada) in Coronary and Structural Intervention.
